An Inside Look at Admissions Decisions

NPR got a seat in the room as admissions offcers at Holy Cross decided whether to "admit, hold, or deny" an applicant. The NPR radio story notes the disturbing reality that the each application is reduced to a one-page profile which the committee considers for just two minutes. The decision turns on a combination of feelings and facts. Ann McDermott, the director of admissions, said, "You have 13 people in a full committee room and 13 different perspectives so it can go any different way." The biggest red flag? "A sloppy, half-baked essay."
